D Series™ Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad

A self-inflating sleeping pad combines open-cell foam and air to provide cushioning and support.

When you unroll the pad and open the valve, the compressed foam begins to expand, drawing air into the pad automatically. Once it has expanded, simply close the valve. You can also add a small amount of air if you prefer a firmer sleeping surface.

Because the foam itself provides cushioning and stable support, self-inflating pads are especially well suited to camping, car camping, road trips, and longer campsite stays, where comfort and easy setup are often more important than minimizing weight.

The main differences are weight, packed size, construction, comfort, and intended use.

Ultralight inflatable pads use air chambers for cushioning and prioritize low weight and compact packability, making them ideal for hiking and backpacking.
Self-inflating pads combine air with a foam core, providing stable cushioning and easier setup. They are well suited to camping, road trips, and family camping.
Air mattresses provide a larger, more bed-like sleeping surface and are generally better suited to car camping, longer campsite stays, or indoor use.

If you need to carry your sleep system over long distances, an ultralight inflatable pad is usually the most practical choice.

Usually, no. A self-inflating sleeping pad draws in air automatically as its internal foam expands, so a separate pump is generally not required.

Simply unroll the pad, open the valve, and allow it time to expand. Once self-inflation is complete, you can add a small amount of air manually or with a compatible pump if you prefer a firmer sleeping surface or want to speed up setup.

If the pad is new or has been stored compressed for a long time, it may take longer to expand during the first few uses.

The right thickness depends on how you balance comfort, support, portability, and packed size.

Thicker self-inflating pads generally provide more cushioning and greater separation from uneven ground, making them a good choice for side sleepers or campers who prioritize comfort. Thinner pads are more compact and easier to transport.

This is normal. “Self-inflating” means that the expanding foam automatically draws air into the pad—it does not necessarily mean the pad will reach your preferred firmness entirely on its own.

As the foam expands, the pressure inside the pad gradually reaches equilibrium with the surrounding air, causing the self-inflation process to slow down and eventually stop.

If you prefer a firmer or more supportive sleeping surface, simply add a small amount of air after the pad has finished self-inflating. For quicker and easier adjustment, you can also use a compact Naturehike air pump to top up the pad to your preferred firmness.

For a new pad or one that has been stored compressed for a long time, allow extra time for the foam to fully recover and expand before adding additional air.

Close the valve before cleaning and gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth, clean water, and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and machine washing. Allow the pad to dry completely before storage.

For short trips, the pad can be deflated and rolled for transport. For long-term storage, however, self-inflating pads are generally best kept unrolled with the valve open. This helps the foam remain expanded and ready to recover more easily the next time you use it.

Store the pad in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, excessive heat, and sharp objects.
